The Luxembourg organisation LUXBD initiates a scholarly cooperation with the German Society for Comic Studies "ComFor" to establish institutional documentation standards.

The institutionalisation of scholarly research in the field of graphic literature experiences a significant expansion in 2026. Through the agreed cooperation between the newly founded Luxembourg association and the established German Society for Comic Studies a new platform for bilateral exchange emerges. This collaboration primarily aims at the systematic recording and scholarly analysis of historical and contemporary exhibits of sequential art.

This formal step was preceded by several informal exploratory talks, which established the substantive basis for the deepened cooperation. The now scheduled initial official working meeting will be conducted as a virtual online session to coordinate organizational foundations efficiently. On the German side the delegation is led by the first president Prof. Dr. Christina Meyer. The scholarly representation is further completed by the second vice president Prof. Dr. Lukas R. A. Wilde and the treasurer Dr. Arnold Bärtschi. This composition guarantees a profound discussion on methodological synergies and structural models of cooperation.

The specialist society founded in 2005 represents the central academic link within the German speaking area for interdisciplinary research. Its long standing expertise in connecting university teaching with museum cultural institutions serves as a valuable reference for building new structures. The Luxembourg side intends to gain strategic impulses from these established processes for developing a complementary specialized archive to deepen mediaspecific research and for implementing its own scholarly recording standards in the field of graphic literature.

The first consultation phase focuses on the transfer of methodological competences in the area of systematic recording and cataloguing. A uniform standard is indispensable for the international visibility of regional productions. The envisioned long term networking is also designed to permanently support joint research projects and bilateral publication initiatives at a European level.

The Ninth Art: Don't trivialize it!

Comics are often dismissed as mere tools for simplification. Yet as the Ninth Art, they possess an autonomous aesthetic, a complex synthesis of space, time, and text that demands active interpretation while maintaining broad accessibility.
