Technical Specifications
- Phenomenology
-
The operational practice of this collective constitutes itself primarily through open, non-commercial workshop formats and collaborative publishing activities. Essential phenomenological characteristics include cyclic artist meetings where shared creation and direct exchange of experience occupy the focus. These physical gatherings form the foundation for compiling regional anthologies that display various visual styles uncensored side by side.
- Systemics
-
Within the cultural landscape, the collective occupies the position of an informal grassroots initiative that explicitly distances itself from administrative, regulating, or theoretical umbrella organizations. The system operates as a link between amateurs and professional actors by dismantling barriers and creating low-threshold opportunities for participation. The classification thus occurs in the field of applied cultural work and active scene promotion.
- Teleology
-
The purpose of the organization lies in vitalizing local production by providing network structures and visible publication windows. Through the format of shared drawing, the isolation of the creative working process is broken up and the collective dynamic is strengthened. The long-term objective is to establish a vibrant, self-sustaining community of cultural creators who support each other in the production process.

- Methodological Note
- The exegesis focuses exclusively on the grassroots production character and the collective workshop formats.
The foundation of D'Frënn vun der 9. Konscht in the year 2019 resulted from the practical need of the Luxembourgish artist scene for an unbureaucratic networking component. While other institutions handle administrative tasks or theoretical analysis, this association focuses on concrete creation and interaction among cultural creators. This distinction is essential for understanding the regional scene, as the structure was conceptualized purely as a working network. The sociocultural practice deliberately breaks with the traditional isolation of the studio by opening physical spaces for the shared creative process.
A central element of this activity represents the recurring format of open drawing sessions organized at regular intervals in changing locations. These meetings serve as a low-threshold meeting point for amateurs, students, and professional illustrators to work on their own projects without performance pressure. Within this context, an informal transfer of technical knowledge takes place, ranging from anatomical studies to digital coloring techniques. The absence of rigid curricula favors an organic development of individual skills through exchange with like-minded peers.
From these collaborative dynamics emerge the publication-related activities of the association, which manifest themselves in thematic anthologies. The project entitled Fortific(a)tions realized in the year 2020 utilized the historical motif of the fortress walls as a loose conceptual guideline for participants. Instead of imposing stylistic constraints, the editorial principle of these volumes allows a coexistence of Franco Belgian lines, underground aesthetics, and manga influences. The anthology thus functions as a printed inventory of the real existing design diversity within the country.
The continuation of this publication strategy occurred in the year 2022 with the volume named Mondorf-les-Bulles, which translated local characteristics of the spa town into sequential stories. Through these publications, the collective generates direct economic and media visibility for the participants, who often face difficulties being heard on the regular book market. The focus here lies not on historical archiving but on creating a vibrant sales platform and promoting young artistic talent. Workshops and presence at regional markets complete this practice-oriented portfolio.
In summary, it can be stated that the association closes a vital gap by consistently concentrating on the technical and social level of comic making. The structure does not understand itself as a regulating authority but as an open infrastructure that lives through the activity of its members. Due to this consistent alignment with grassroots production, the entity fundamentally differs from academic or purely documentary organizations. The work of the association thus remains a practical catalyst for contemporary visual storytelling culture within the Grand Duchy.
