  • Grammage refers to the mass per unit area of paper or board, expressed in grams per square meter (g/m2). It is the key metric for determining density, opacity, and tactile quality in book production.

Grammage is one of the fundamental decision variables in the bibliophile design of the ninth art. It defines the physical presence of a work and significantly influences the aesthetic perception of the reader. In the production of comics and graphic novels, the choice of grammage is a balancing act between technical necessity and artistic expression. A basis weight that is too low often leads to undesirable show-through in color-intensive illustrations, compromising the visual integrity of the reverse side.

Furthermore, grammage correlates directly with the book block thickness and the final weight of the product. In bookbinding, the grammage must be synchronized with the chosen binding technique, such as Smyth sewing or perfect binding. Heavy papers exceeding 170 g/m2 often require creasing before folding to prevent the paper coating from cracking. The choice of grammage is therefore not just a matter of haptics, but a calculated engineering feat that ensures the durability and functionality of the object within an archival context.

    Technical Specifications

    Phenomenology
Specification follows ISO 536. Characteristic features include the correlation with paper thickness (bulk) and the resulting flexural rigidity. A higher grammage reduces transparency (show-through), which is essential for double-sided printed comics.
    Systemics
Systematically, grammage is classified as a physical property in paper and printing technology. It serves to differentiate between paper (up to approx. 150 g/m2), semi-board, and paperboard (up to approx. 600 g/m2). In sequential art, it determines the structural integrity of the codex.
    Teleology
Grammage influences the opening behavior and the durability of the binding. While the interior pages of graphic novels often range from 115 to 150 g/m2, covers require higher values (250 to 350 g/m2) to ensure protection and tactile value.
